ABOUT ROTARY

Rotary International is a global network of service volunteers. It is the world's largest service organisation for business and professional people, with some 1,210,905 members operating in 168 countries world-wide. There are some 58,000 Rotarians in Great Britain and Ireland in 1,845 clubs, helping those in need and working towards world understanding and peace. It’s a fulfilling role, and Rotarians can get involved as much or as little as their time will allow. But there is much more. Clubs meet on a regular basis, allowing members to build firm friendships. Every Rotarian has a right to attend any Club meeting anywhere in the world, so there is always somewhere to go, and people to meet, wherever business or leisure travel may take you.

Rotary Club of Westgate & Birchington

The Rotary Club of Westgate & Birchington has 42 members and meets every Tuesday at 6.30 p.m. at St Augustine’s Conference Centre, Canterbury Road, Westgate-on-Sea. We place great emphasis on fellowship and welcome members of all ages to our lively meetings. Over an excellent dinner we discuss how we may be of service to the community, both locally and internationally and how we may support worthwhile causes through our fund-raising activities. We often enjoy a fascinating external speaker and welcome guests who would like to consider becoming Rotarians to our meetings. We have strong links with the Rotary Clubs of Poitiers (Futuroscope) and Darmstadt (Kranichstein) and maintain a lively programme of exchange visits and co-operative service.

Guests are always most welcome – just call our Secretary Ray, 01843 863553.  A full programme of events engenders a great deal of fun and fellowship. This theme continues as help is given to our communities both locally and overseas. The Club keeps the Rotary Motto “Service above Self” in mind as it helps the lonely at Christmas and in the Spring. Our Millennium Fund helps local young people. Fundraising is of course required and this is done through a variety of events including our Swimathon now in its 4th year. Recently we have supported Mercy Ships (a floating hospital), Cancer Research, local Scouts, the women’s refuge Oasis and many other charities. We support Rotary International (1.2m  members worldwide) in advancing international understanding with strong links with our European Contact Clubs and in its pledge to rid the world of Polio.

Rotary Club of Ramsgate

The Rotary Club of Ramsgate is one of the oldest in Thanet, having been founded in 1921 and involved in the establishment of some of the other Clubs in the area. We meet each Tuesday at Courtstairs in Pegwell Road at 6 for 6.30pm and we are a very friendly Club with Members who are extremely active and attendance is always excellent. We invite Speakers from all sectors of both the Public and Private Communities and are in the process of recruiting new Members. We have a Contact Club in Boulogne-sur-Mer and endeavour to have some joint activities with them every year. Although we are one of the smaller Clubs in the District, the accent is on good Fellowship and willingness to serve and we donate as much as £10,000 each year to mostly local Charities, due entirely to the efforts of our Members.
